An introduction of the Bolt Tightening Module within the GWO Basic Technical Training Standard
On May 2nd 2023 Global Wind Organisation released some important changes in the Basic Technical Training (BTT) Standard. The release includes a new Bolt Tightening Module and reintroduces three previously removed safety lessons to BTT Mechanical, Electrical and Hydraulic modules. Christopher Furlan, the Training Project Manager, summarised the bolt tightening developments as:
The new Bolt Tightening Module provides a more in-depth training than that previously offered by the BTT Mechanical Module. The module uses scenario-based training to focus on safety and quality, requiring participants to plan, carry out, document and review bolt tightening tasks. Aligning the training with the job performance, safety and quality requirements while preparing participants for further company specific training".
With the addition of this new module, the BTT Mechanical Module has been shortened, with the removal of the lesson on hydraulic torquing and tensioning. As such, participants completing the BTT Mechanical will only receive bolt tightening training using manual tools and accessories. The shortened BTT Mechanical will be a prerequisite for the new BTT Bolt Tightening Module.
The Bolt Tightening Module lasts eight hours and is divided into four key topics.
1. Bolt tightening in the wind industry builds upon the training participants received during the BTT Mechanical, further developing their knowledge of bolt tightening.
2. Bolt torquing using energy-powered tools and accessories includes scenario-based training where participants learn to safely and correctly conduct the bolt torquing.
3. Bolt tensioning using energy-powered tools and accessories includes scenario-based training where participants learn to safely and correctly conduct bolt tensioning.
4. Mechanical handling aids introduce participants to mechanical handling aids typically used in conjunction with bolt tightening tasks in the wind industry.
